FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Is Hammerhead Wrestling connected to any school district or school-sponsored wrestling program?
A. No. Hammerhead Wrestling Club, LLC is a private wrestling club. It is open to any athlete, 3rd grade - adult, regardless of town of residence, looking to learn the three styles of wrestling in the U.S (folkstyle, freestyle, and greco-roman), or training for the next level. HWC offers a proprietary belt-level curriculum system aimed at instruction and goal-setting, both on the mat and off.
Q: Do wrestlers HAVE to wear a singlet?
A. We get this a lot! The short answer is NO! We recommend that kids wear clean shorts and t-shirts at practice. For youth wrestlers, they may wear shorts and a compression-type or rashguard t-shirt at tournaments. You will see many kids wearing the traditional singlet-style uniform at tournaments as well, but it is not mandatory. We often find that kids are firmly on one side of the fence or the other regarding this issue - they either love the singlet and have many of them, or they hate it. Hammerhead does not want to see kids choosing not to wrestle because of this, so wear whatever makes you comfortable! UFC-style fight shorts and a compression shirt are perfectly fine to practice and compete in . We do require wrestling shoes and headgear, though.
Q: How long do your sessions run?
A: We run 8 or 10 week sessions in the fall, winter, and spring. Our spring session focuses entirely on the Olympic styles of wrestling - freestyle & greco-roman. The spring session is great for experienced wrestlers looking to join a competitive travel team. Our other sessions during the year allow flexibility for athletes who may play other sports or participate in other activities, but have time off and nothing to do, such as during the fall or winter. HWC encourages our athletes to play other sports. Wrestling is the one sport that prepares athletes for a variety of other sports: motion, footwork, agility, balance, body-awareness, level change, hand fighting, mental focus, self-discipline are a number of skills directly transferable to soccer, football, track, X-C, baseball, lacrosse, and basketball, to name a few.
Q: Our kids love to wrestle at home, but our family skis/snowboards most weekends in the winter. Can they participate?
A: Absolutely! Our practices run Tuesdays and Thursdays, usually 6-7:30 pm for youth advanced/middle school/high school. Saturday tournaments are strictly optional. The Hammerhead philosophy includes engaging in outdoor activities. Many of our coaches ski on Sundays as well! Additionally, the physical skills honed through wrestling make any kid a better skier, snowboarder, football player, soccer player, or track athlete. There is no substitute for hard work and commitment.
Q: My son/daughter is thinking about wrestling, loves to wrestle at home, but we are hesitant to sign-up. Can we come and watch a practice?
A: Absolutely! Please feel free to come anytime to observe a practice free of charge. We also encourage kids to bring a friend and have them try it out! Our coaches firmly believe that kids enjoy wrestling much more over time if their friends are involved as well.
Q: Do your practices run late?
A: NO - we firmly believe that kids should be home for dinner with the family before 7pm, 6:30 if possible. This gives them time to get proper nutrition and to complete their schoolwork before bedtime, hopefully before 9pm! We also believe kids today are robbed of physical education time during the school day, so 5-7 pm is the perfect time to let them open the throttle, get some instructional exercise and have fun! We do request that kids learn to attend practice ON TIME if possible, as each session includes crucial instruction and learning. Learning to be on-time, ready to practice, and responsible are life-lessons that kids carry into adulthood.
